Let me begin by saying that I haven’t always been a podcast enthusiast. In fact, I hadn’t listened to my first podcast until this past year. Having recently transitioned to a new job involving an office setting and consistent traveling, I knew I needed something to keep my mind active and more importantly, entertained. Whether on the go or at my desk, podcasts have become a slight obsession of mine. My favorite thing about podcasts? They’re like portable friendships you can take with you wherever you go. No but really, you begin to develop imaginary friendships with your favorite hosts, impatiently waiting for the thirty minutes you get to “hang out” weekly through your speakers.
There’s literally TONS of podcasts out there (over 250,000 to be exact), and so it’s all about finding your jam. From a variety of topics ranging from education, politics, health, education, television, etc., iTunes is truly your oyster. Aside from the imaginary friendships I’ve created in my mind, podcasts have also contributed to new, healthy habits I’ve developed. Raise your hand if you’ve ever fallen victim to the habit of grabbing for your phone the moment you wake in the morning? Join the club, you and me both, friend! For the last half of 2017 I made it my mission to tweak my daily routine, beginning with how I chose to start my day. Rather than scrolling through my social media first thing (let’s be honest, I still struggle with this), I began spending 30-45 minutes listening to a subscribed podcast while I went through my normal morning routine. This minor change has helped tremendously in setting a positive tone prior to entering the workplace, along with leveling up my productivity throughout the day.

1. For the boss babe…The Goal Digger Podcast
A huge thank you to a dear friend that put me on to this podcast when I shared my desire with her to begin blogging. I literally fell in love with not only this podcast, but its host, Jenna Kutcher, upon just one listen. Jenna Kutcher is the epitome of a boss babe that keeps it 100% real when it comes to all things entrepreneurship. Twice a week Jenna dishes out strategies for the creative girl boss, in addition to training how to dig in, roll up your sleeves, and tackle your biggest goals along the way. She’s literally made a brand out of her love for photography, yoga pants, and mac and cheese. Why WOULDN’T you want to be Jenna’s friend?! (listen here)
2. For the hopeless romantic...Modern Love: The Podcast
From the pages of The New York Times and the studios of WBUR Boston, I first heard an excerpt of Modern Love while listening to NPR. This weekly podcast explores the joys and tribulations of intimate relationships in their various forms. Additionally each week’s episode features a memorable reader-submitted essay read by such notables as Julia Stiles, Emmy Rossum, Cynthia Nixon, and more. With true stories of loss, love, and redemption, Modern Love is sure to tug at your heartstrings. (listen here)
3. For the 20/30-somethings…Gettin’ Grown
While I’m currently soaking up the remaining two years of my 20s, I will certainly be dragging this podcast into my quickly-approaching-30s. Jade and Keia are two unapologetically black women navigating this thing called ‘adulting’ while living in both Brooklyn, NY and Washington, D.C., respectively. Pull up a chair and an Olivia Pope glass of wine, as you’re sure to feel as though you’re catching up with your closest girlfriends. Get ready to laugh hysterically (and nod ferociously in agreement) through segments titled Kitchen Table Talk, Petty Peeves, and Lessons in Black Women Self Care. (listen here)
4. For the faux vegan…Food Heaven Podcast
Okay, so I say for the faux vegan only to kid. But if you’re like me, than you know that this describes you. As someone that has suffered from ongoing tummy sensitivities (more to come in a future post), I’m always looking to learn more about homeopathic remedies, beginning with the foods I eat. Hosted by two registered dietitians and BFFs, Wendy and Jess share tips on creating a healthier, better you, one meal at a time. Is soy safe to eat? Where to begin with starting an exercise routine? The Food Heaven Podcast lays it all out for the busy professional aiming to put their health at the forefront. (listen here)
5. For the political buff…On One with Angela Rye
No fake news here. With being an attorney on The Hill, political commentator on CNN, and NPR political analyst, let’s face it, Angela Rye is #goals. Her resume doesn’t stop here, hosting On One with Angela Rye, where she dishes out honest answers to the pressing political, racial, and pop culture questions of the day.
